Treatments & Care

Dr Mohammed offers a comprehensive range of advanced cancer treatments, alongside holistic support tailored to each patient. Care is personalised, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes while maintaining quality of life.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is a highly effective treatment that uses carefully targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells while aiming to minimise damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Dr Mohammed offers advanced techniques tailored to each patient.

Systemic Treatments

Systemic treatments use medication to treat cancer cells throughout the body. These therapies may be used alone or alongside radiotherapy as part of a personalised treatment plan, depending on the type and stage of cancer.

Holistic Care

Holistic care is an important part of cancer treatment, focusing on supporting your physical and emotional wellbeing. Dr Mohammed provides access to supportive services to help you manage the impact of cancer and maintain quality of life.

Radiotherapy

This is a high dose of radiotherapy that is given to people with primary cancer (cancer that has not spread beyond the part of the body where it originally began). Radical radiotherapy uses high energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells while aiming to minimise harm to the surrounding, normal cells. Your oncology team will explain what to expect during treatment.
This is sometimes called ‘radiotherapy to relieve symptoms’. The aim of palliative radiotherapy is not to cure cancer but instead to slow its growth, shrink the cancer and control symptoms. Depending on the type of cancer you have and where in the body it has spread to (secondary cancer), you may be offered external radiotherapy (which uses radiation to destroy cancer cells from outside the body) or internal radiotherapy (radiation treatment from inside the body).
Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) – also known as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) – delivers an intense and highly focused dose of radiation to a tumour, while limiting the dose to surrounding organs. It is particularly beneficial when there are critical organs close to the treatment site.
Stereotactic radiosurgery uses 3D imaging to target high doses of radiation to treat tumours, while minimising the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. A Gamma Knife machine uses small beams of gamma rays to treat cancerous and non-cancerous brain abnormalities.
MR Linac machines combine high resolution MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanning with intense radiotherapy to accurately target and treat tumours. You may also hear this called Magnetic Resonance Image Guided Radiotherapy (MRIgRT).
Tumour treating fields (TTF) is an innovative procedure for treating glioblastoma brain tumours. It uses a device called an Optune to deliver alternating electrical fields, which pulse through the scalp and can prevent the tumour from growing or slow its spread.

Systematic Treatments

This is a drug treatment that uses chemicals to kill cancer cells within the body. There are many different chemotherapy drugs, which may be used alone or in combination to treat various forms of cancer. Chemotherapy is a highly effective cancer treatment, but it carries a risk of side-effects. Your oncology team will discuss these with you.
Immunotherapy is a form of cancer treatment that supports your immune system to fight the cancer cells. It is a type of biological therapy. Checkpoint inhibitors help to reverse a process whereby certain cancer cells cause the body’s T cells to ‘switch off’. Checkpoint inhibitors help to turn the immune system back on again so the body’s own T cells can fight back against the cancer cells.
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are a form of targeted therapy used to treat cancer. TKIs work by blocking enzymes in cancerous cells which control how fast the cells can grow and divide. While TKIs can’t cure cancer, they can put it into long-term remission.
